VMWare Workstation 8 on OpenSuse 12.1 64bit

First Download VMware Workstation 8.0.1 from VMWware.

Once downloaded open a terminal and switch to root (be careful)
su –

Change directory to the directory containing the installer

Now change permissions on the installer file so that it is executable
chmod 755 VMware-Workstation-Full-8.0.1-528992.x86_64.bundle

Now execute the installer

Once the installer finishes install gcc, make, and Kernel-Source
zypper install gcc
zypper install make
zypper install kernel-source

Now open VMWare Workstation 8.0.1
(reboot may be needed)

Did you actually do this or just post generic instructions that you assumed would work? There’s already a lengthy thread discussing how 8.0.1 DOES NOT work for OpenSuse 12.1

Yes, I did actually do this. I am not a fan of posting concepts, I actually do before I post. I am glad you asked this. One thing to note is that the kernel version has changed since I have done this. So this is a method tested with a fresh version of OpenSuse 12.1 and not one that has had its kernel upgraded.

I just installed Vmware Workstation 8.02 on Suse 12.1
After finding the right installation file ( on the europe vmware server is the bundle missing, only the tar is available) this went through without any problems. I did also not need the patches.
